Graduation Dress Guide

Posted on June 14, 2012

It’s so hard to find a dress for graduation. At first I thought, why bother? I’m wearing a gown over it. But people keep telling me how important it is, and I do like an excuse to buy new clothes. Whether you’re on a tight budget or don’t have a budget, you deserve an awesome dress.

The Little Black Dress

The little black dress works for most occasions, It’s my go-to dress when I’m not sure what to wear. Also, black is a very forgiving colour, and you don’t need to look like a  model to wear it. There is a whole ‘Little Black Dresses‘ section at New Look.

Black dresses can look a  little bit plain. So this Miso Zoe Party Dress (£25) from Republic is a nice twist on the little black dress.

Graphic cutwork dress

If you want something a bit more expensive and formal. This Graphic Cutwork Dress from Karen Millen (£80) may be for you. Karen Millen dresses feel so nice on, and the fitted material really holds you in.

Something Different

If you want to stand out. You may want to go for something more unusual.

Floral cutwork dress

This Floral Cutwork Dress (£210) is also from Karen Millen. Personally I think it’s gorgeous. But it’s not to everyone’s taste and it is quite pricey.

Depending on what colour your gowns are, you could choose to dress brightly. I love bright colours, and this colour (described as petrol on H&M’s website) in particular seems to be popping up everywhere this season. It’s very similar to the colour of my graduation dress.  This figure-fit dress is £29.99. If you are a pear shape (like me) this dress may not be suited to you because of the frills on the hips.

Paisley is another one that is popping up everywhere. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but great if you want something different. The intricate pattern of this Paisley dress (£28 – Republic) is balanced by the basic shape.

As were supposed to be all grown up now, I guess it’s time to dress like it.

This dress from H&M (£24.99), with its draped neckline is  very clean and sophisticated.

This is your day, and if you’d rather look more casual and comfortable you could try a nice summer dress (as it is supposed to be summer).

New Look – Mizumi White Butterfly Bandeau Dress – £27.99

There’s not long left now before graduation so if you don’t have your dress it’s time to get looking. Whether you’re wearing a formal or casual dress it’s best to find something that not only looks good but you feel comfortable in. But don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t find the perfect dress. It will probably be covered up by your gown for most of the day anyway.

..and dont’ forget the matching shoes.
